About Me

Hi there, my name is Alan Gurling and here’s a few things I’d like to share about myself.
I’m a huge metalhead. I love listening to extreme metal, and a lot of the bands and artists that I listen aren’t even on Spotify. They’re mainly on Bandcamp.
I’m also a big tech enthusiast. For as long as I can remember I’ve always had an interest in computing, especially on how it helps each and every one of us in different ways.
At the moment, I’ve discovered a newfound passion for Asian comics. When I was younger, I loved reading Japanese manga. In the last few years, I’ve discovered that the Koreans have capitalised on the smartphone format and have the WebToons platform (and that Korean manga are called “manhwa”). On top of this, the Chinese have their own “manhua” and I’ve slowly come to appreciate the enthusiasm of the various countries and cultures in the media that they develop.
One of my main personal passions is photography. I own a Pentax DSLR and a few lenses for it. I love walking through unfamiliar locations and taking photos of perspectives that I find interesting. Photography has enabled me to bring to life a small part of how I see the world around me. And it’s a feeling that is hard to put into words.
I spent most of the first half of my life in the Philippines, and moved here in the UK back in 2008.
I have the perspective of living in both a third-world country, and one that’s part of the G7. It’s certainly one that has shaped how I see things, and how I feel about various important topics in our world.
One of, if not the most important thing we need to have more of is KINDNESS. I’m big on that.
Kindness is a personal core tenet of mine. It’s something that I strongly believe in. And it’s something that I try to incorporate into each and every action that I do on a daily basis.
That’s pretty much most of what I’m about, at least for the moment. With this blog, I’m hoping to connect with like-minded people all over the world, and discuss the various topics that pique my curiosity.
